Why are compression garments worn after a surgical procedure?

January 14th, 2010 by cdietz No comments »

A compression garment is support clothing used by people who have recently undergone some type of surgical procedure. Post Surgical Compression Garments are worn immediately following a surgical procedure for the following reasons.

Compression Garment reduces swelling (edema) and helps prevent the build up harmful fluids. The compressions garment will provide compression on the skin that will push fluids away from the skin, helping to reduce swelling and aiding in healing. Flushing fluids from your body help reduce bruising and the risk of infection during the healing process.

Compression garments help hold skin firmly against the body, aiding in molding the body to its new shape. In addition, they are designed with seams on the outside of the garment to keep from leaving indentations on the skin.

A properly fitted, compression garment will make you much more comfortable during the recovery process by reducing swelling. In addition, the lightweight, breathable material will make you much more comfortable when wearing the garment for extended periods of time. There are compression garments for nearly every type of surgical procedure, including liposuction, tummy tucks, breast implants, and abdominoplasty.

Why can’t I wear tight exercise garments?
Compression garment are designed to provide targeted compression, something that is not found in a standard girdle or exercise garments.  Exercise garments, regular girdles and sports bras also do not have outside flat seams, an open crotch and are not intended for long term, 24-hour usage. You need a garment specifically designed to compress the skin for surgical purposes and that is comfortable for the length of your recovery. Your compression garment literally becomes your “second skin.”

What is the difference between First Stage and Second Stage compression garments?
First Stage garments are worn immediately after surgery and provide moderate compression and may be worn for up to 2 weeks. First Stage garments are zippered with reinforced seams allows for easy application and durability during the critical immediate postoperative period.

Second Stage garments provide continued healing compression and support during the second stage of recovery (typically 2-8 weeks post-op). Second stage garments are non-zippered, pull-on and sized smaller for additional support to the newly contoured body. Second stage garments also fit smoothly under clothing as patients become more active and keep zippers from making impressions in the skin. Depending on the surgical procedure, a second-stage compression garment may need to be worn anywhere from a few weeks to a few months following surgery.

Dark Circles under eyes are a common problem and there are ways to get rid of them

The facial flaw is quite embarrassing since it is visible to everyone. The appearance of dark circles are generally a sign of someone who has allergies, heredity or lack of sleep. Knowing the cause of your dark circles can help you understand how to get rid of them.

Heredity is the primary cause of dark circles.  Skin tone is also inherited and can make dark circles appear more dramatic.  Not getting enough sleep can sometimes increase the appearance of dark circles. But even if you get enough sleep there is a chance that you may develop dark circles with age. Allergies are a very common cause and this can be seen with young children who have allergies.

Exposure to the sun can increase your chances of dark circles. Sunlight darkens the skin and raises melanin levels.

Treatments for Dark Circles

  • If you’re feeling very self-conscious you can try to use concealing makeup to help camouflage the problem. Using yellow will neutralize the purple hues on the skin. This is only a temporary fix but can be a quick solution if you need something fast.
  • Another natural solution is cucumbers and tea bags. Use damp caffeine tea bags  and cover with cold cucumbers to reduce swelling. Tea bags are effective for dark swollen circles because they contain tannin that helps with eliminating the puffiness. Keep this on your eyes for about 10 – 15 minutes.
  • Vitamin K treatments help to reduce fluid buildup under the eyes, which decreases the dark circles. Vitamin K Oxide, activates the body’s natural healing process to help eliminate the unsightly reddish-blue discolorations. Auriderm illume eye creme is soothing and non-irritating and can be used continuously to help eliminate dark circles.

What to expect with Liposuction Surgery by viewing it in 3D Animation

November 29th, 2009 by cdietz No comments »

Liposuction removes fat deposits in specific areas of the body and is performed through small, incisions. Sometimes exercise and dieting are not able to get rid of all fat deposits. Liposuction is a great way to remove the fat in those areas.

The Surgeon will infuse a sterile liquid solution to reduce bleeding and trauma. Then a thin hollow tube is inserted through these incisions to loosen excess fat using a controlled back and forth motion.

The fat is then suctioned out of the body using a surgical vacuum or syringe attached to the cannula.

For the best results your surgeon will recommend you wear a compression garment or liposuction garment. Using compression garments after surgery improves blood circulation, minimizes swelling after the procedure, flushes the body out of harmful fluids, expedites the healing process, and allows the patient to recover sooner.

Once the swelling and fluid retention subside your improved body contour will be apparent.

The loss of excess fatty tissue should be permanently maintained with exercise and a healthy diet . However, substantial weight gain can alter an otherwise permanent result.

How Much is Liposuction Surgery?

November 5th, 2009 by cdietz No comments »

Liposuction, like with most Plastic Surgery consists of three fees: surgeon fees, operating room fees and anesthesia fees. The majority of the cost is the surgeon’s fee. The anesthesia fees can range from approximately $400 to $2,000, depending on the parts of the body treated. The office or hospital fees range from $600 to $1,200 depending on the number of areas where liposuction is performed.

Liposuction costs is hard to estimate. Liposuction can be performed on many different parts of the body, different machines can be used, there are different types of anesthesia, and many types of surgeons from different fields. It is best to get examined by a surgeon to get an accurate cost.. The cost of liposuction also varies from city to city.

The fee for liposuction of a single area such as the abdomen by liposuction can range from $2000 to $7000 or more depending on the size of the area. The fee typically depends on the amount of time to perform the liposuction. If the patient has several areas of to be treated and they are not too large, then liposuction of more than one area can be performed on the same day.

The average cost to one area of the body treated can be up to $4,500. If liposuction is performed in three areas it can be up to $7,000 to $8,000.

In general, traditional liposuction with syringe is the least expensive.

There are many different kinds of liposuction being advertised – Smart lipo, Cool lipo, Ultrasonic lipo, Vaser lipo, etc. CoolLipo is a laser liposuction device for a more targeted means to reduce pockets or small areas of body fat. A similar procedure is under the name Smart lipo.  Smart Lipo is a device used in laser liposuction – a procedure that uses a laser to dissolve fat cells, followed by suction to remove the fat. Another procedure is Vaser liposuction that targets fat on your hips, thighs, chin, or abdomen. Vaser stands for Vibration Amplification of Sound Energy at Resonance. Vaser lipo is marketed to remove fat deposits with smoother results than traditional liposuction and with reduced bruising and swelling. Please remember it is not the technique that is important, it is the quality of the surgeon.

Following liposuction surgery, your doctor will ask you to wear a compression garment. Surgical compression garments help loose skin mold firmly against the body, and is more likely to heal without sagging. Liposuction compression garments squeezes the body’s fluids back toward deeper tissues, reducing edema (swelling) in the affected areas. And using compression garments after liposuction improves blood circulation, minimizes swelling after the procedure, flushes the body out of harmful fluids, expedites the healing process, and allows the patient to recover sooner..

How do scars form?

October 29th, 2009 by cdietz 2 comments »

How do Scars Form?

Various factors affect how skin scars. The body will stop collagen production in a scar when the skin strengthens. If collagen production continues then abnormal scars will form.

Hypertrophic scars are raised and red scars that are similar to keloids .If the scar tissue reaches out beyond the injured area, this is called a keloid scar. Keloids most often occur in people with dark skin. You can prevent keloid formation by using pressure treatments or silicone sheets when you have an injury.

Both hypertrophic and keloid scars can cause burning, itching, uncomfortable nerve sensations, and an undesirable appearance. Of course, the depth and size of the wound or incision and the location of the injury are going to impact the scar’s characteristics.

Scars usually fade over time but usually will not go away completely. If the way a scar looks bothers you, various treatments might minimize it. These include surgical revision, dermabrasion, laser treatments, injections, chemical peels, silicone sheets and creams
